Financial planning support for UK pension trustees & scheme administrators
Internationally mobile members can create questions that extend beyond the administration of the pension scheme itself.
A member may live overseas, be considering a transfer, need retirement income paid abroad, have beneficiaries in another country or be trying to coordinate a UK pension with retirement assets accumulated elsewhere.
Josh Clancey works alongside UK pension trustees and scheme administrators where a member needs wider financial planning around retirement, investments, cash flow, future residence or the use of pension benefits.
Where financial planning can sit alongside scheme administration
The trustee or scheme administrator remains responsible for scheme governance, administration, member communications and the operation of the scheme within its rules and regulatory framework.
Josh's role is financial planning.
That may include helping a member understand how their UK pension fits alongside other retirement assets, investment accounts, future spending, currency needs, beneficiaries and retirement plans in another country.
This distinction is particularly important where the member is considering a transfer or where safeguarded benefits are involved.
Scheme information can establish what options are available. Financial planning can then help the member understand how those options fit into their wider circumstances.

Client situations where scheme administration and financial planning commonly intersect
A member lives overseas
The pesion may remain in the UK while the member's banking, spending, taxation and retirement plans are based elsewhere.
A member has a defined benefit pension
Scheme benefits, dependant benefits, inflation protection and retirement options need to be understood before wider financial-planning decisions are made.
A member is considering a transfer
The scheme can provide transfer information and discharge its administrative responsibilities, while the member may separately need regulated transfer advice and wider retirement planning.
A member wants to access benefits while overseas
The client may need to consider withdrawal strategy, local tax treatment, banking, currency and how the pension interacts with other retirement income.
A member has retirement assets in several countries
The UK scheme may form only one part of a wider retirement position involving overseas pensions, US retirement accounts or personally held investments.
Beneficiary planning has become more important
A member living abroad may have beneficiaries in another jurisdiction or changing family circumstances that justify reviewing nominations and the wider estate plan.
Questions that may indicate a wider financial-planning need
Does the member understand the benefits they already have?
Scheme options, guaranteed benefits and dependant benefits should be understood before any wider recommendation is considered.
Where does the member expect to retire?
Future residence can affect tax advice, banking, currency and the practical use of pension income.
Does the member hold other pensions or investments?
A UK scheme should normally be considered within the member's wider retirement resources.
Is the member considering a transfer?
Where regulated transfer advice is required, the appropriate authorised adviser should undertake that work before wider implementation.
How much retirement income does the member need?
The scheme can explain available benefits. Cash-flow planning can help assess how those benefits fit the member's overall retirement spending.
Who are the intended beneficiaries?
Nomination and death-benefit arrangements may need to be coordinated with the member's wider family and estate-planning position.
Is the member likely to move country again?
Future mobility may affect the practicality of different retirement arrangements and should be considered before long-term changes are made.

Transfers, overseas members and scheme information
For overseas members, a transfer request may involve more than the mechanics of moving benefits.
HMRC's current guidance requires pension scheme administrators to report transfers to a qualifying recognised overseas pension scheme through the Managing Pension Schemes service within 60 calendar days of the transfer.
The scheme's role remains separate from the member's financial advice.
Where the member needs regulated transfer advice, tax advice or specialist legal analysis, that should come from the appropriately qualified adviser.
Josh can then help with the wider financial-planning questions, such as how the pension fits with retirement spending, investments, other pensions and future residence.
HMRC also requires all administrators of UK registered pension schemes to be UK resident from 6 April 2026, reinforcing the distinction between scheme administration and the member's wider overseas planning.

Working alongside trustees and administrators
Where the scheme has already provided the relevant benefit information, Josh can use that information as part of the member's wider financial plan.
For example:
- the scheme confirms retirement options, while Josh models how they affect the member's overall retirement cash flow
- the administrator provides transfer information, while the appropriate regulated adviser addresses the transfer recommendation
- the scheme confirms dependant and death benefits, while Josh helps the member review wider beneficiary planning
- the administrator explains payment options, while Josh considers how pension income should interact with other assets
- the scheme provides member data, while Josh helps the client coordinate UK pension benefits with retirement assets held in other countries
Josh does not administer schemes, act as trustee or replace the relevant pension-transfer specialist.
Where a recommendation depends on scheme rules, regulated pension advice, tax treatment or legal interpretation, the appropriate professional should establish that position first.

Technical briefings for pension teams
Josh can provide focused briefings for trustees, scheme administrators and pension professionals dealing with internationally mobile members.

Have an overseas member case you would like to discuss?
If a member's UK pension sits alongside overseas residence, other retirement assets, beneficiary issues or wider retirement planning, an initial discussion can help establish whether financial-planning input would be useful.
There is no requirement to make a formal introduction simply to determine whether the case falls within Josh's remit.
